1. WELCOME
----------
Thanks for taking a ride on "Highway ZX2," the Ford Escort ZX2
WebROM. You're using one of the first titles that has the rich
media capabilities of a CD-ROM, while pulling live, updated
content directly from the Web. In other words, it's really cool!
Buckled up and ready to ride? This help file has answers to the
most frequently asked questions and problems most users encounter
... so come back here anytime you need directions.
------------------
2. GETTING STARTED
------------------
2A. System Requirements
We've designed the Highway ZX2 WebROM to take advantage of the
latest advances in PC technology. Therefore, some older computers
may play certain animations a little slower than normal. Modems
should be 28.8 Kbps or higher.
Windows: Optimized for Pentium-75, 16MB RAM, 4X CD-ROM drive.
Macintosh: Optimized for any PowerPC with a 4X CD-ROM drive.
2B. Browser Requirements
Highway ZX2 supports only the latest versions of Netscape Navigator
(currently 3.0 for Mac and Windows) or Microsoft Internet Explorer
(currently 3.02 for Windows, 3.01 for Mac).
Netscape Navigator can be found at:
http://home.netscape.com/
Microsoft Internet Explorer can be found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/ie/
If you do not have a Web browser that is capable of downloading
Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, contact your
service provider. They should have the software you need.
2C. Plug-Ins
For Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, you will
need both the Shockwave and QuickTime VR plug-ins to view all
areas of the site.
Shockwave can be downloaded at: http://www.macromedia.com
QuickTime VR can be downloaded at: http://www.apple.com
---------------
3. INSTALLATION
---------------
3A. Windows Installation
1) Insert the CD-ROM in your drive.
2) Open your CD-ROM drive, either by looking in "My Computer"
or using the Windows Explorer.
3) Double-click on "Setup.exe"
4) Click Continue.
5) Click Install.
3B. Macintosh Installation
1) Insert the CD-ROM in your drive.
2) Double-click on the "Installer"
3) Click Continue.
4) Choose which items you want to install. Easy Install will
install everything, and requires a total of 15MB or hard
disk space. Select "Custom Install" if you want to install
specific items. The Ford Escort ZX2 program will require
approximately 5MB of free disk space. The screen savers
will require 10MB of free disk space.
5) Click Install.
------------------------
4. LAUNCHING THE PROGRAM
------------------------
1) Quit or exit all active programs.
2) Open your Internet connection. Your ISP should have provided
software and instructions for this. If you cannot do this,
go to the next step and your browser may do it for you.
3) Double-click on the Highway ZX2 icon inside the program group
or folder where the program was installed.
4) The program will automatically try to start up your Internet
connection if it is not already open.
MAC USERS: The Mac version may ask you to locate the
browser on your computer. Open it just like you would open a
file from within any application.
------------------------
5. NAVIGATING THE CD-ROM
------------------------
5A. The Menu Bar
The Menu Bar is how you'll get around the CD-ROM environment of
Highway ZX2. Click on the Ford logo at the upper left to open and
close the vertical menu bar.
Hit the question mark "?" button on the menu bar to see what the
buttons do.
The menu buttons with little pictures on them take you to different
"locations" within the WebROM, like the Showroom or the Laundromat.
The red arrow takes you back to the last location you visited, and
the EXIT button exits the program.
5B. Entering and Leaving Areas
You can also navigate Highway ZX2 by clicking on certain on-screen
"hotspots." You start out on Main Street. As you move your cursor
around the screen, you'll see certain items "light up," and doors
opening. So if you roll over the Showroom and its door opens, you
know that clicking on it will take you there.
However, once you are in a scene, chances are there will not be an
on-screen way to get back to where you were. To go back, open the
Menu Bar (by clicking on the Ford logo) and click the "Back Arrow"
button near the bottom of the bar.
5C. Playing Games
You get two games on this disc: Spoon Toss, located in Poppa
Wheelies Caffeine Cafe, and Terry Firma's Highway Cleanup, located
in the Showroom. Both contain on-screen instructions. Go for the
world high score!
Games on the Web: The games on the CD-ROM are quicker and have
better sound than the games on the Ford site. Still, if you have
the Shockwave plug-in for your browser (www.macromedia.com), you
can play these games on the Internet, if that floats your boat.
5D. Playing Music
The Ford Escort ZX2 WebROM has four music tracks you can play from
the CD player within "Club Hubcap." You can also listen to these
tracks with a standard CD player.
Wanna see a cool twist on your computer's CD player? Go to
http://www.amp.apple.com/imt/imt.html and download the Apple Blue
Book player for Mac or Windows. The tracks will be named for you,
and you can read information about the artists.
5E. Playing Video
Video is a major part of the experience. Wherever you see a monitor,
you can play product or music videos. You'll need Apple's QuickTime
installed on your computer to see and hear them. The extension is
standard on the Mac (go to www.apple.com for the latest), and a
QuickTime for Windows Installer is included on this CD-ROM.
5F. Playing RealVR
RealVR technology lets you look around the inside and outside of
the ZX2.
Roll your cursor over the VR picture. When you see an arrow that
points four ways, click your (left) mouse button and hold it. Now
moving your mouse will pan and tilt your view, just like you're
literally looking around.
You can even zoom in by pressing Shift, and zoom out by pressing the
Control key.
---------------------
6. GETTING ON THE WEB
---------------------
6A. How to Navigate
Certain areas on the CD-ROM grab content from the Web. Other items
send you to specific areas of the Ford Web site, using your browser.
Once you're at the Highway ZX2 Web site, you'll see many of the
controls you're used to.
6B. Returning to the Highway ZX2 Program
You don't have to quit your browser to return to the program. Just
clicking outside the browser usually sends you to the program. But
if that doesn't work, try these tips:
For Windows: Either minimize the browser (click on the button that
looks like this "_" at the top right of your browser window) or move
your cursor to the very bottom to use your Task Bar. Click on the
"Highway ZX2" button.
For MacOS: Resize your browser window and click on the CD-ROM screen
running in the background.
--------------------------
7. USING THE SCREEN SAVERS
--------------------------
If you did not select the screen savers when you installed Highway
ZX2, go ahead and run the SETUP or installer again, and pick the
screen savers you want. In Windows, look under "Screen Saver" in
the "Display" control panel to turn the screen saver on. Don't set
the activation time for less than 5 minutes, or it'll come on in
the middle of watching a video!
In MacOS, you'll also run the installer, and using Custom Install,
select only the screen savers. This will put them in a folder with
the Highway ZX2 Program. Open the ScreenSavers folder, then drag
the screen saver you want onto the System Folder. Now you can change
the settings for it as you would any control panel. Restart your
computer to activate it.
----------------------
8. LEAVING THE PROGRAM
----------------------
To exit the program, open the Ford menu bar and click the "Quit"
button. You will have to close your Web browser separately if it is
still running.
Another way you can quit is by hitting [Ctrl+period] or [ESC] in
Windows, or [Command+period] or [Command+Q] in MacOS.
------------------

A. Installation Problems
-- Computer won't recognize CD-ROM in drive
Unlike the Enhanced CD format, which stores computer data in Track
#1, the Blue Book CD format stores this data in a separate partition
to prevent damage to standard CD audio players. To read it, you will
need a multi-session capable CD-ROM drive.
But don't worry, most of today's 4X CD-ROM drives can read multi-
session discs, IF YOU HAVE THE LATEST CD-ROM DRIVER. Visit your
computer or drive manufacturer's site, or call them for the most
recent driver.
For MacOS: If you use the CD-ROM Toolkit control panel, open it,
click Options, and make sure this box is checked: "Upon CD inserts,
search every track for possible data to mount." Power Computing
machines often come with this utility.
Users having problems mounting the CD-ROM can go to our updated
Technical FAQ on the Web, at http://www.fordvehicles.com/zx2/help.html.
-- Installation fails
Try to run the program, as it may have been installed successfully
anyway. If it doesn't work, make sure all programs and utilities
like virus checkers and memory doublers are turned off. On the Mac,
restart and hold down [Shift] to disable extensions for the install.
-- QuickTime not installed
If you don't have 32-bit QuickTime installed on your PC, videos may
not play correctly. To install it in Windows, double-click on the
"QTeasy32.exe" icon right next to the Setup file on your CD-ROM.
B. Monitor Problems
-- Colors too dark
First, take a look at your monitor settings. In Windows, this is in
Control Panels: Display. This title is optimized for 256 colors.
Switch your monitor settings and restart your computer if necessary.
If you are happy with the performance you are getting in 16-bit mode
you may just need to adjust the brightness and contrast settings
directly on your monitor.
-- Strange colors on screen
First, make sure your monitor or display control panel is set to 256
colors.
If the problem persists in Windows, you might have a graphics card
incompatibility. Under Display, make sure you have the right driver
for your specific graphics card. Contact your computer or graphics
card manufacturer if you need the latest driver.
C. Audio Problems
-- No audio
First, make sure your speakers are turned on, turned up, and plugged
into the sound output of your computer. Also, check the cord going
to the input of your speakers. Hey, it's OK, we do it too.
Next, go to the sound or "Multimedia" control panel and make sure
that the playback volume is turned up, and the "Muting" box is
unchecked. This should solve most problems.
-- Still no audio (Windows)
If you still can't hear audio in Windows, chances are your
computer is not recognizing your sound card. Open your Multimedia
control panel and make sure there is a device driver selected for
your audio card. Click on the list and select your card's driver.
Try playing now.
If this fails, go back to the Multimedia control panel and select
"Advanced" at the top. Find your audio driver and double-click it.
Make sure "Use audio features..." is selected, and "Do not map audio"
is not selected. If you still have no audio, you either have an IRQ
conflict or are missing the driver for your audio card.
Refer to your computer or sound card manual for instructions on
how to change your IRQ and DMA settings. Or ask a geeky friend for
help.
-- Audio cuts out
Make sure all of your audio cords are securely plugged in and the
jacks are not loose. If your speaker cable or headphones have been
bent or stepped on, they may also develop a short that causes audio
to cut out.
The other reason audio will simply cut out is if the program does
not have enough memory available. Audio is the first thing to go.
You can resolve this by quitting all open programs, and (on the Mac)
reducing the Preferred RAM usage to the minimum. You can even shut
down your browser and visit www.fordvehicles.com/zx2 separately, if
you do not have enough RAM to run both simultaneously.
Or, install more RAM. It's cheap these days.
-- Strange noises (Windows)
This WebROM is chock-full of strange noises, but if you're hearing
something like digital "puking," this section's for you.
Something is probably wrong with your audio card. Go to your
Multimedia control panel, and make sure the correct sound driver is
selected. If you don't know what card you have, try setting it to
Sound Blaster, the common denominator of sound cards.
If this doesn't solve the problem, check to make sure the card is
not loose in its slot.
-- Can't play Audio CD tracks
If you can hear audio, but not the CD tracks, make sure your
standard Audio CD driver or extension is on.
In Windows, check the Multimedia control panel, and click on CD
Music. Make sure the volume here is turned up. If that doesn't
work, click on Advanced and make sure there is a CD Player driver
under Media Control, and double-click on it to make sure it's
enabled. If you just got your Audio card, follow the installation
steps in its manual and/or the "Add New Hardware" function of
Windows.
On the Mac, make sure your Audio CD Extension is enabled. Either
turn it on using the Extensions Manager control panel, or just drag
it on top of the System Folder if you don't use Extensions Manager.
D. Animation Problems
-- Slow or chunky animations
Make sure your monitor is set to 256 colors. In MacOS, you can also
increase the preferred memory of the Highway ZX2 program (Select
the program and Get Info...) if you have plenty of free RAM.
-- Sound out of sync with animation
Different computers and CD-ROM drives will play at different speeds.
In MacOS, you can try increasing the memory requirements of
Highway ZX2. The more RAM you have, and the faster your processor
and CD-ROM are, the better your animations and sounds will play.
E. Video/VR Problems
-- Video won't play at all
You need to have QuickTime 2.5 installed. Run the "QTeasy32.exe"
setup from the CD-ROM in Windows. If you have a Mac and cannot see
video, chances are your QuickTime extensions are disabled. Make sure
the QuickTime 2.5 extensions are in your Extensions folder and turned
on if you are using the Extensions Manager Control Panel.
-- Video with no sound
See "C: Audio Problems."
-- Sound, but no video
-- Video appears as a single horizontal line w/sound.
You either have a problem with your graphics card, or an old version
of QuickTime. If you are not sure if you have the latest version
installed, run the "QTeasy32.exe" setup from the CD-ROM in Windows.
If that is not the problem, your graphics card probably needs the
newest driver to display video. Download the latest driver from
your computer or video card manufacturer. A few older cards may not
support video playback.
-- Video jerks/plays slowly
This usually happens when your CD-ROM is not keeping up with the
data rate of the movie (which can be up to 350K/sec). If you have
a 4X CD-ROM drive, it should be able to keep up, and you probably
need to get the latest software driver from the manufacturer of your
computer or drive.
You can also try increasing the CD-ROM cache. See your computer or
hardware manufacturer's manuals.
-- Can't see VR movies (on the Web)
You need to have QuickTime 2.5 installed. Run the "QTeasy32.exe" setup
from the CD-ROM. If you have a Mac, make sure your QuickTime extensions
are enabled.
F. Browser Problems
-- The WebROM won't launch your browser
You probably need the latest version of Netscape Navigator or
Internet Explorer. If you have a browser, go get them at either
home.netscape.com or www.microsoft.com. If you do not have a net-
ready browser installed then contact your ISP for the software you
need.
-- Fonts on the screen look too big or too small
You have probably set your default font too large or too small on
your browser. In your Options, select a font that is common and
easy to read, like Times for the proportional font and Courier for
the fixed-width font. Set the size to 12, as most pages are
designed with these settings in mind.
-- Server not found (No DNS Entry, No Such Server)
Your Internet connection has probably been interrupted. Open your
net connection task (Windows) or PPP control panel (Mac) and close
your connection, then reopen it.
You might turn your modem or even your entire computer off and on
again if you cannot reconnect.
-- No response/Server busy
On occasion, recreational traffic to the www.fordvehicles.com site
may be extremely high. If you have one of these messages come up in
your browser window, try again.
If you keep failing to connect, try clearing your cache:
In Netscape: Go to the "Options" menu and pull down "Network
Preferences. Now click both the "Clear Memory Cache" and "Clear
Disk Cache" buttons.
In IE: Under the "View" menu, select "Options." Click the Advanced
tab. Near the bottom of the window, click the "Empty" button.
-- Can't get out of browser
First, make sure and try the steps listed in the main instructions under
6B: "Returning to the Highway ZX2 Program." If that doesn't work,
force quit your browser, by hitting [CTRL+ALT+DEL] in Windows or
[option-command-esc] in the MacOS.
G. Memory Problems
-- Not enough memory on startup
Make sure and quit all other programs and tasks (except perhaps your
Web browser) before starting the program.
Mac users, select your browser and press [command-I] to Get
Info, then reduce the browser's preferred memory. Disable unneeded
control panels and extensions.
-- Not enough memory to launch browser
Make sure and quit all other programs and tasks (except perhaps your
Web browser) before starting the program.
Mac users, select the Highway ZX2 icon and press [command-I] to Get
Info, then reduce the browser's preferred memory. You can also turn
Virtual Memory on in the Memory control panel, though this may slow
down performance.
-- Almost out of memory warning (Mac)
This means you have allocated just about all of your memory to the
active programs. It can affect video play, as QuickTime needs about
900K of headroom to run. Quit and look at "About this Mac" under
the Apple Menu. This shows your total memory available. Do a "Get
Info..." [command-I] on your browser. Reduce the Preferred Memory
(you can't reduce it below the minimum).
-- Not enough memory in browser
While you are surfing the Web and looking at Shockwave animations
and games, they tend to remain in the browser's memory. If you get
messages like "Out of memory," clear your cache:
In Netscape: Go the "Options" menu and pull down "Network
Preferences. Now click both the "Clear Memory Cache" and "Clear
Disk Cache" buttons.
In IE: Under the "View" menu, select "Options." Click the Advanced
tab. Near the bottom of the window, click the "Empty" button.
H. Printing Problems
-- Won't print
In Windows, make sure the printer is on and the cable is firmly
connected to the printer and computer. Check Page Setup (under the
File menu) before you try again and make sure the correct printer
information is there. You can reinstall the drivers from the disk
that came with your printer. Beyond that, read your computer and
printer manuals for additional instructions.
In MacOS, open the Chooser (under the Apple menu). Make sure your
printer is selected. If it is attached to your Ethernet or Appletalk
ports, make sure that AppleTalk is on and that printer input is
selected. You can reinstall the drivers from the disk that came with
your printer. Beyond that, read your computer and printer manuals
for additional instructions.
-- Prints with the wrong orientation
Under the File menu, select "Page Setup." Make sure the orientation
is set the way you want it (usually "Portrait" or vertical).
If the orientation problem persists, you may need to download a new
printer configuration file to the printer. You can usually find this
in Page Setup in Windows, or by using the Chooser (Hit "Setup") in
MacOS.
Beyond that, consult your computer or printer manual for configuration
instructions for your specific printer.
-- Blocky/pixellated type
If your printed type looks "jaggy," then chances are you are missing
the screen or printer font of your browser's default font. Under
Options, change your default font to one that is common and on your
computer. In addition, you may need to turn on ATM or a printer-
specific font utility to smooth printing.
If none of these steps work, try reinstalling the standard fonts
from the disks that came with your MacOS or Windows system.
I. Other Problems
-- Can't quit the program
If the Quit button is not responding, hit [Ctrl-period] or
[Command-period] to immediately quit.
If this doesn't work, the program has frozen. You can end the task
by hitting [CTRL+ALT+DEL] in Windows or [option-command-esc] in the
MacOS.
-- File missing error
If a file is missing, you need to make sure none of the original
files have been moved from the directories they were installed
into. Also, check to see if the CD-ROM is mounted in the drive.
If you're not sure what happened to missing files, your best bet is
to delete the old directory and reinstall the whole thing. If you
still have problems, try visiting our technical tips site at
http://www.fordvehicles.com/zx2/help.
-- Games play slowly
First of all, make sure you're playing the games from the disc and
not inside your Web browser. You can play them using Shockwave over
the Internet, but they load faster and have better sound from the
CD-ROM.
Additionally, make sure your monitor is set to 256 colors, and all
other programs are turned off.
-- Error type 11, etc.
Go ahead and try to continue the program. If it won't work,
reinstall it, as it may have been corrupted.
-- Eyes hurting
Hey, we know it's fun, but don't sit there staring at a screen
forever. Put on some shades, visit a Ford Dealer and test drive the
new Ford Escort ZX2!
